Becoming a Canadian citizen is an important milestone. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you can apply for Canadian citizenship. This process involves several steps, including submitting an application, passing a citizenship test, and attending an interview, if necessary.
Eligibility Requirements
- Permanent Resident Status: You must be a permanent resident of Canada.
- Physical Presence: You must have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days) before applying.
- Language Proficiency: You must be able to communicate in English or French (if you are between 18 and 54 years old).
- Filing Taxes: You must have filed taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period, if required under the Income Tax Act.
- Criminal History: You must not have been convicted of a serious criminal offense during the last 4 years before applying.
- Intent to Reside in Canada: You must intend to continue living in Canada after becoming a citizen.
Application Process
The Canadian citizenship application process involves the following steps:
- Step 1: Gather Required Documents: Submit all required documents, including your permanent resident card, language proof, tax records, and more.
- Step 2: Pay the Application Fee: Pay the necessary application fee. As of now, the fee for an adult is CAD 630, and for minors, it is CAD 100.
- Step 3: Submit Your Application: Submit the completed application and documents online or by mail.
After You Apply
- Processing Time: The processing time for citizenship applications varies, but it usually takes around 12 months.
- Citizenship Test: If you are between 18 and 54 years old, you will need to take a citizenship test on Canadian history, values, institutions, and symbols.
- Interview: In some cases, applicants may be required to attend an interview with a citizenship official.
- Decision: Once your application is processed, a decision will be made. If approved, you will receive a notice to attend a citizenship ceremony.
Citizenship Ceremony
After your application is approved, you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony, where you will take the Oath of Citizenship. Once you take the Oath, you will officially be a Canadian citizen.
Important Notes
- Refusals: If your application is refused, you may be able to appeal or reapply after addressing the issues.
- Dual Citizenship: Canada allows dual citizenship, meaning you can keep your original citizenship while becoming a Canadian citizen.
